Playtime in Paris!

Before you wonder what on earth I’m talking about, Playtime in Paris is a trade fair I have just returned from. Aptly named though as my trip definitely felt more like play and less like work. It’s one of the biggest international fairs for the world of baby and new mum products and all my European suppliers exhibit there as well as many potential new suppliers. As you can imagine, it was a foregone conclusion that I would attend, given the location! I must admit, it was a little tough exchanging my own cooking for a little bit of French cuisine, swapping the A14 for the Champs Elysees, and forgoing my daughter’s 6am wake up call for a more civilised start with the hotel’s continental breakfast. But I managed it. And I took my Mum along for the ride too. Like me, she’s a bit of a fan of Paris!

So with my daughter fast asleep in her cot and her Daddy in full charge (i.e. also fast asleep in bed) we departed Cambridge bleary eyed, early on Saturday morning en route for the Eurostar to Paris. Luckily the forecast snow hadn’t settled and so nothing could get in the way of our trip across the channel. I arrived in time for a late and light Saturday lunch of soup and quenelles at the wonderful small chain of cafes that is Giraudet. So different and so French!  The afternoon was spent sightseeing: we window shopped the art galleries in the stone arches surrounding the Place du Vosges, walked down to the Seine passing the ice rink outside L’Hotel de Ville, then past Notre Dame before enjoying a glass of vin rouge sitting outside in a pretty St Germain street cafe. Not much like work yet! Well, let me get onto that…

it made a huge difference to see the clothes up close

We had all day Sunday at the Fair. It was invaluable to meet my suppliers face to face and see their products “in the flesh”. They were exhibiting Autumn Winter 2013, and seeing as I need to confirm my orders by the end of this month, it made a huge difference to see the clothes up close. It’s the only way to truly gauge the colours, the quality, the feel, and to see how they hang and how the nursing openings work – nursing fashions need to be outstanding quality to withstand lots of washing and wearing, and the nursing openings need to be a doddle to operate. (Believe me, not all nursing clothes are!) I don’t want to give too much away, but I can see the knitwear collection getting bigger and also more vibrant colours are on the cards. As for new suppliers, there’s a couple I’m considering…

Me at Playtime

With Helena from Love Milk

We booked dinner at the brilliant Pramil restaurant where I chose some really tasty truffle pasta – the perfect posh comfort food after a long day.

Monday we woke to wonderful sunshine and blue skies. Just right for long walk and where better than along the Champs Elysees from the Louvre and through the Jardins de Tuileries towards the Arc du Triomphe? This was finished off with lunch and a spot of shopping in Galleries Lafayette before we headed back to Gare du Nord and towards home.

The Louvre in brilliant sunshine

If only all work trips were like this. I returned late Monday night telling my husband that I would absolutely have to go every year!
