It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas

I’ve finally started my Christmas shopping (well, only yesterday actually), had a think about our Christmas menu, eaten a large quantity of Stollen and put the decorations up, all in the space of the last few days. I have to say that it’s now feeling decidedly festive in our house. Never mind the kids, I’m becoming unashamedly excited about the season that is Yule, and not so much for the 25th itself but the whole build up to it. Here’s five reasons why I feel like a big kid about Christmas this year:

1. It’s the very first one we’ve spent in our own house. We get to wake up in our own beds and most importantly we don’t have to make the eight hour journey we usually do to Cornwall or Scotland (to the parents / grandparents), a journey which has become decidedly more tedious since having children.

3. Because we now have two little bundles of joy to enjoy it with who will no doubt wake us up in the wee hours to tell us that Santa has been and open their stockings in OUR bed.

3. Because Elsa is nearly four and I believe a perfect age to appreciate the magical side of Christmas whilst still remaining fairly easy going about what presents she receives. The most she’s asked for so far is sparkly hair clips and a Frozen outfit. I’m fully aware that when she starts school next year she’ll start to get very big ideas, so for this year at least we’ll aim to keep the present giving (reasonably) sensible and focus on the exciting build up to the big day, baking some Christmas treats, seeing our local Panto and going to visit Santa in his grotto.

4. We have our own real tree for the first time and my little girl helped me decorate it. She thought it was the most beautiful thing she’d ever seen even before we’d decorated it and every time she comes into the living room now she says “wow”. I just love how appreciative she is.

5. All our closest family will be with us. Grandparents are travelling to us from the far reaches of the country. My husband has taken nearly two weeks off work. But probably the most special thing is that my sister will be with us for the first time in ages. She’s a chef and for as long as I can remember she’s worked on Christmas day. I insisted she shouldn’t do any cooking and she should put her feet up with a glass of mulled. I think she was tempted for a minute but then had a think and told me she couldn’t bear to sit back and watch the rest of us making a hash of it in the kitchen so she’s going to help me. Oh, alright then, if she insists!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas, whatever you are up to. xxx
