Beautiful Breastfeeding Clothes

Crunch point

The crunch point came when I was invited to a friend’s wedding when Elsa was only 4 months old. There I was about to meet up with friends I hadn’t seen in ages, all excited about finally having an opportunity to dress up and party, but the euphoria was significantly dampened by the fact that I just didn’t have a thing to wear. Any of my old party dresses were either too tight (around the boobs or tummy or both!) or didn’t allow that much needed easy boob access.

As the date got closer I really started to panic. I scoured the web but anything decent was out of stock. So there was nothing for it, I would have to make a trip into town. I used to truly love clothes shopping, in fact most kinds of shopping, but as any new mum will identify with, shopping trips that used to give me a great buzz before my daughter was born now filled me with a sinking feeling.

In those early days I was usually pretty worn out after finally managing to get both of us washed, dressed and fed in the morning, so that after driving into town and finally managing to find a mother and baby space (don’t get me started on those!) it was already high time we celebrated by stopping for lunch. This was the usual routine and once we were revitalised after our respective feeds, we would finally hit some shops. And if I actually found something which looked like I could pull the strap or neckline down for feeding (very rare), would it flatter my post-natal tummy (highly unlikely), and did they actually have changing rooms big enough (I mean for the BUGGY – my tummy’s not that big!)?

I felt cheated and cross because I was putting up with second best

To cut a long story short I did manage to find a stretchy high street dress that didn’t look too bad. But I didn’t feel glamorous in it – instead I felt cheated and cross because I was putting up with second best. Why should it have been such a struggle to find something beautiful to wear? Breastfeeding is such a normal thing to do so why aren’t its fashions better catered for?

About Me:

My name is Emma and I have three (!) wonderful babies. The oldest is my daughter Elsa, born in 2011 the second is “Milk & Mummy” my online boutique selling beautiful breastfeeding clothes and launched in 2012, and the youngest is my son Oliver, born in August 2014. All three exhaust me, excite me and make me proud on a daily basis and naturally all vie for my attention! But of course I wouldn't have it any other way.
